12th Domino World Championship 2006
Marina Despotovic is Domino World Champion 2006!
This year, a new record was set for the number of participants: A total of 80 players from seven countries played for the World Cup title in Estonia, Norway, Germany and Switzerland.
And for the first time in FIDO history, the title went to a participant from the JUVENTE winter camp in Bielefeld – and so to speak in a double pack the bronze title (3rd place) at the same time, namely to Joakim Gunnerød from Oslo, who also took part in this event.
The 13-year-old world champion had first got to know the domino game at the IOGT World Congress in Münchenstein near Basel six months earlier. A refresher round to practise in Bielefeld had obviously been enough for her to win two of the three World Championship rounds – one of them by a large margin – which eventually helped her to the title.
Earlier, on the occasion of the World Championship, an interview with Frank Lindemann as chairman of FIDO Germany had appeared in the socialist daily newspaper »Neues Deutschland«, which was the first time in Germany that a national daily newspaper had presented in detail the way of playing, tactics and history of the domino game run by FIDO.
On 6 January 2007, Marina received the trophy donated by two-time domino world champion Walti Bader from FIDO founder Frank Lindemann. As requested, it was filled with wine gum (the cup, not Frank Lindemann). Thanks to the efforts of FIDO Switzerland coordinator Alex Klee, the regional media also took a lively interest in this event. This makes it the biggest press coverage of the FIDO World Cup so far, after the nationwide Norwegian press coverage of the first World Cup in 1995.
